Why did the original gasket fail?
Failure of these gaskets is extremely rare. When one does fail, it is usually due to a material defect.
We have a very strict procedure to maintain consistency in the quality of the material and formation of the gaskets. However, as is the case in any manufacturing process, the possibility of a material defect, no matter how rare, still exists.
Does this expandable gasket make this reel "freeze" proof?
No. The expandable gasket is designed to absorb and survive expanding ice in case the owner forgets to drain the water out of the hose reel prior to the onset of freezing temperatures. However, surviving a hard freeze is not guaranteed and this gasket does NOT make the reel or the swivel "freeze proof." The hose reel and swivel should still be drained of all water before the onset of freezing temperatures as freeze damage is NOT covered by our 10-Year Warranty.
Will the sun's UV rays deteriorate the gasket?
Yes, but not to the point where it would cause failure within the 10-year warranty period. The gasket would have to be in direct sunlight almost every day for this to be an issue.
